This course will address the extent to which implicit bias may be hard-wired into our brains, driven by subtle cognitive processes that operate at a level below conscious awareness. The program will discuss research showing why we have implicit biases and will describe the principal types of unconscious biases impacting the practice of law. Focusing on where implicit bias comes from in terms of how our brains work, the course will help explain why implicit biases are so difficult to overcome, and what types of research-based training law firms can provide that can help us make better decisions, improve our ability to serve our clients, and achieve greater effectiveness.
