Mary Beth O'Connor will describe her personal history of 20 years of drug use and 30+ years of sobriety, including being appointed a federal administrative law judge. She then will define substance use disorder and provide related data for attorneys. She will explain the overlap between addiction and other mental health disorders and will then review specific drugs of abuse and the opioid overdose epidemic. She will address examples of relevant ethics rules and share tips for employers. She will provide recovery strategies that many find useful and will provide evidence-based techniques that friends and family can use to help those struggling with substances.
